Silo S1E1

I had never heard of this show before but decided to give it a go as its got that nice combo of dystopian sci-fi and mystery that keeps a show interesting.

I also thought I’d have a go at an episode-by-episode review of the series until it’s either done or I am bored with it.

Let’s be honest, considering what I’m like, it’ll be the latter, but still, it will kill some time.

Diving right in, after having watched no trailers, heard no advertisement, been uninfluenced by anything, and having only watched this episode once, here are my thoughts:

It’s a pretty rough episode. Lots of ideas are thrown at the audience and I think some of the writing is lacking finesse.

The silo itself is .. kind of big? Or is it small? I’m not sure, the sense of scale is not given. It must be pretty large though, which makes me wonder where all the food and water is coming from.

  • A huge attempt is made to define the relationship between us and Rashida Jones which would have been better left as a flashback
  • We don’t care enough about her to give a shit about her leaving
  • It should have been some other person leaving and influencing Rashida instead
  • Too much focus on sex being fun (ahahaha another sex reference - fantastic)
  • A big time jump between Rashida leaving and that guy from Spooks deciding to leave too
  • I personally don’t like it when shows use a “Flash Forward” approach, as it doesn’t seem like anything actually moved along
  • Why are people allowed access to computers and records and all that stuff if that’s where the BIG SECRET is kept hidden?
  • Why are some people able to post on a BBS without it being manually approved? Actually how can they even have an intranet in a silo? Isn’t that a bad way to keep people isolated?
  • Are we really supposed to believe that “doing as you are told” is a genetic trait?
  • Is it so bad to have a man portrayed as an engineer these days?
  • Why do the silo people give those that want to leave a fancy looking suit? Surely that is a strain on limited resources? Also, if the lie is that the air is toxic, and people don’t believe it and still want to leave, just let them go and die?

Anyway, on the whole this episode was ok, I think I’ll give it a 6/10 for an opener.

I am hoping writing improves but I am looking forward to the next episode.
